Opened in March 1959 in the new Arndale Centre. The opening of a huge Woolco store (No. 2007) nearby in 1970 caused a major downturn in sales. IN a bizarre quirk of fate Kingfisher closed New Washington in 1984 to concentrate on the Woolco store, only to dispose of the Woolco in 1985. Today Washington customers have to travel to Chester Le Street 0267 for their nearest Woolies or, for the more adverturous 1256 Byker
