Store History & Background:

The first Woolworths opened in Western Road, Brighton (No 73) on 5th August 1916. It was joined by further stores in London Road (illustrated, No. 288) which opened on 29th October 1927 and in St James Street (No. 292) on 26th November in the same year. The original London Road store (now the site of Sainsburys) was extended on 8th June 1934. Woolworths relocated up the road to the current Art Deco premises which opened with two floors on 28th May 1965. The store was modernised in 1980 and in several stages during 1981. In 1987 the store was temporarily closed by an arsen fire in the basement floor which closed and never reopened. When the lease expired in 1991 (much to the joy of local campaigners) the company decided to renew it. The store had limited remedial works in the 1990s. 292 St James's Street on the other hand was closed by Kingfisher in 1984 and is now occupied by the Reject Shop, while 73 Brighton was cutdown and modernised in 1986, releasing some of the frontage for Clinton Cards. Store 73 was updated to the 10/10 format after demerger.
