Store History & Background:
Opened in Princes Street, Edinburgh in March 1926. It was intended to be the flagship store in Scotland. During the 1930s the store was substantially extended, taking over the neighbouring cinema. The store was modernised again in the 1950, leaving the and 1960s and throughout the 1970s was the pride of the company. It was unceremoniously closed by Kingfisher (to be redeveloped into smaller shop units) during 1983, along with Store 0674 in Lothian Road (opened on 30th October 1936) and store store 1071 in Dairy Road, leaving store 1096 in Raeburn Place (opened on 16th July 1964) to carry the flag single-handed. Woolworths broadened the offer in Edinburgh with the first Big W out of town store in Milton Road (No. 1208 which opened in 1999) and a Woolworths General Store in Lothian Road (No. 2003 which opened in 2001). |
