Store History & Background:
Woolworths first opened in Constitution Street Leith on 31st January 1925. The store was extended on 16th August 1962 and again in 1970, reopening in self-service format on 12th February (pictured). There was further modernisation work in 1974 (reopening on 20th June), and the store piloted the Cornerstone (food-centric) strategy with a refurb in 1985 (reopening 23rd October), which was quickly adapted to remove the food element less than a year later in August 1986. Surplus space was released to Chartwell Land (aka Woolworth Properties Ltd) to be relet in January 1989, and the store was upgraded to the latest 10/10 specification after demerger |
