Store History & Background:
Woolworths opened in prestigious premises facing the old houses in High Holborn, London, WC1 in November 1924 and was extended in the 1930s. It was damaged in the bombardment that destroyed much of the City including neighbouring Paternoster Square and was featured extensively in the American media under the censored caption 'an unknown London store damaged in the blitz'. It was quickly repaired and modernised in both the 1950s and 1970s. It was one of the first property disposals by Kingfisher, releasing funds for their other investments and closing in 1984. The store was pulled down and replaced by a large hotel at upper floor level and smaller stores including Clinton Cards at ground level. |
