Store History & Background:
The Woolworths flagship store in Kensington High Street opened in August 1924. It was purpose-built by the company's own construction department and boasted a large cinema frontage finished in glazed cream marble brickwork. It housed the Kensington regional office from the 1920s until 1960s. Kensington Region spanned most of the West Country as well as some of East Anglia and the North West London suburbs. The store relocated to new premises along the road in the 1960s (illustrated) and was one of three large freehold buildings (alongside the two Oxford Street stores, Nos. 161 and 463) sold by F. W. Woolworth & Co. Ltd. in 1980 to fund the purchase of B&Q. It closed in 1981 and like 161 Oxford Street is now a flagship store for UNIQLO. |
