Store History & Background:
The company's flagship store 161 Oxford Street, London W1. Oxford Street opened in August 1924 and from 1924 until 1960 housed Metropolitan Regional Office on the top floor. By the 1970s the store included a big restaurant in the basement, a dedicated food hall with wines and spirits on the first floor and a huge range of toiletries, tourist items and jewellery on the ground salesfloor. It was sold by F. W. Woolworth & Co. Ltd to fund the purchase of B&Q, along with its sister stores 162 Kensington High Street and 463 Oxford Street, but actually closed shortly after the Kingfisher takeover. |
