Store History & Background:

Woolworths first opened in Gallowtree Gate, Leicester in June 1915, substantially enlarging the store in the 1920s and 1930s and remodelling the premises again in 1965. Part of the company's persuasion package to get the local authority to approve the out-of-town development at nearby Oadby was to demonstrate a continued commitment to town centre and High Street-based stores. The store was modernised again in the 1970s before being sold on to BHS by Kingfisher shortly after the takeover. Unlike in other locations Kingifsher set up a new, large City Centre store (No. 1141) in the nearby Haymarket Shopping Centre which traded from 1986 - 2007. for redevlopment by Kingfisher as
